Youth Steering Committee

Hi, my name is Horace and I play violin in the Symphony Division. I have been playing violin for about 13 years and 10 of those years I have been in RDYO. Within the Youth Steering Committee, my role as a committee chair is to lead tasks and jobs so that RDYO can be a more youth led organization. My passions within RDYO are of course playing my instrument but some other things I am passionate about are helping with stage and sound tech during concert set up and take down. A phrase I go by is “you will never know if it works until you try it”. It may seem a bit out of context for some things but for myself, I like taking risks so that things can happen and most of the time, it is rewarding. I hope within this committee, we can help ensure that everyone feels welcomed and voices be heard.

Hey! My name is Caitlyn Chen and I am a clarinet player for the Senior Winds division. I am a Grade 11 student at Southpointe Academy and I have been a part of RDYO for 4 years now. Outside of playing clarinet, I can be found with my nose in a book, playing basketball, playing piano or listening to music. As part of the Youth Steering Committee, I hope to help bring a student voice to RDYO and to expand and strengthen our community.

My name is Levi Tolentino. I am in grade 10 and attend Hugh McRoberts Secondary. I have been a member of RDYO for four years and currently play trombone for the Senior Winds Division. If I am not found practicing an instrument, I will most likely be biking, skiing, or catching up on sleep. As part of the Youth Steering Committee, I want to bring social skills to help bond orchestra members and create an inclusive family which in turn will allow our community to become well-knit. I would also like to help newer members of the orchestra by supporting and giving them the confidence that they need to shine. I hope that this will start a chain reaction, allowing younger musicians to find their joy and passion in music.

My name is Shannyn Li. I am a grade 12 student at Little Flower Academy and I play violin in Symphony. I have been in RDYO for roughly 4 years. Outside of playing violin, I enjoy singing, hanging out with my friends, and watching documentaries. As committee chair, my goal is to support inclusion and diversity and help each individual feel valued and respected. I believe it is important to create a supportive environment for each individual to be able to strive to be the best versions of themselves. I hope to be able to share my enthusiasm for music and help each individual grow in their musical journey to the best of their abilities.

My name is Jacky, and I am a first-year IB student at Churchill Secondary School. I play the clarinet in the Senior Winds division and have been a member of the RDYO for six years. Beyond music, I enjoy creating sketches in my free time and am also a competitive figure skater. Through being in this position, I hope to share my passion for music and inspire more young people to explore playing in an orchestra. I look forward to learning, growing, and connecting with others as we embark on this musical journey together.

Hi! My name is Tim, and I'm 15 years old. I play the clarinet in the Symphony division. Outside of music, I enjoy photography and have a passion for graphic design. As a member of the Youth Steering Committee, I hope my contributions help raise awareness about RDYO, encourage more people to join, and inspire others to pursue their passion for music.

My name is Altina Ng. I am a grade 11 student studying at Steveston-London Secondary School. I am a cellist in the Symphony Division of Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra. Outside of music, I am passionate about sports and enjoy spending time with friends. As a committed musician, I aspire to contribute my skills, knowledge, and dedication to the orchestra, while continuously growing within such a talented and inspiring community. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for music, collaborating with fellow musicians, and fostering an environment where we can all inspire, challenge, learn from one another.

Hi everyone! My name is Jerry, and I play the baritone in the Senior Winds division. I am 16 years old, and I have been playing in the RDYO for 5 years. I really enjoy playing in this orchestra ever since I joined, loving how the RDYO provides such a astonishing and unique platform for young musicians to learn, play, and enjoy music. As part of the Youth Steering Committee, I hope to help make the members of this orchestra join together like a family, this way we encourage others to join and enjoy being part of the RDYO, helping more young musicians like us to further explore their passion in music.
