Welcome to our 2017 – 2018 Season!  Our first rehearsal day will be Saturday, September 16! We are looking forward to the new season.

Our Intermediate conductor Yvanna Mycyk is off taking care of her new born. In the meantime, we would like to welcome Manti Poon to our faculty to lead the Intermediate division this fall. Manti is a violist and a much sought-after musician in British Columbia as a soloist, orchestral musician and chamber music collaborator. Apart from holding the position of principal violist with the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra and the Canada West Chamber Orchestra, he also performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, to name a few. Mr. Poon is one of the founding members of the Classical String Quartet and also performs regularly with the Vancouver Intercultural Ensemble and the Pacific Rim String Quartet on both violin and viola. Mr. Poon is on faculty at the Douglas College, the Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Vancouver Academy of Music

We also welcome Katerina Gimon to our RDYO team as our new administrator. Besides her talents in arts administration, Katerina is also an up and coming award-winning Canadian composer, improviser, and experimental vocalist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Recently named as one of Canada’s hot 30 classical musicians under 30 by the CBC, her music has been described as “intimate”, “thought-provoking”, and “staggering in its beauty and originality”

Member News:

Hello RDYO families, we are seeking Division Managers for Junior Winds and Senior Winds. Division managers are important information conduits between conductors and players. The job won’t take much of your time but is very rewarding. Please consider serving the Orchestra in this way, and email admin@rdyo.ca if you can help.

AGM

Thanks to all BCYMS members who attended our AGM on September 9th. It was great to see so many new and returning parents. During the meeting, we shared a lot of important information about the upcoming year. If you missed the meeting, you might want to download our Powerpoint presentation so you can catch up! (available on student’s page)

Culture Days

RDYO is proud to participate in Culture Days, a celebration of arts and culture in the City of Richmond and across Canada. This year, our Symphony and Senior Winds Divisions will present an open rehearsal at the Performance Hall, Richmond Cultural Centre, between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 30th. Please feel free to drop into these rehearsals and enjoy these talented musicians!

On Sunday, October 1st, RDYO presents a musical instrument petting zoo, with instruments generously provided by Long & McQuade. We’ll be in the Atrium at the Richmond Cultural Centre between 10:30 am and 1:00 pm, handing out balloons and helping children of all ages try out instruments.

Music Development Camp

Our young musicians in Intermediate and Senior Strings, Junior and Senior Winds, and Symphony, are invited to attend our Music Development Camp at Camp Luther, on Hatzic Lake, BC, over Thanksgiving weekend. The camp operates from Friday evening to Sunday at 1:00 pm. More details to be released soon!

Parade of Music

Please plan to bring family and friends to “East Meets West,” presented by RDYO as part of the Rotary Club’s Parade of Music. The Parade of Music is an important fundraising concert for Rotary, and an excellent opportunity for RDYO families and friends to hear our young musicians perform a repertoire that includes traditional Chinese as well as Western music. Please mark your calendar for 6:30 pm on Saturday, November 18th at Fraserview Church. More information will be released soon!

Christmas Concert

RDYO’s traditional and well-loved Christmas concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 10th, at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. There’s lots of space at Genesis for you to bring family and friends, who will not want to miss out on RDYO’s famous Christmas basket raffle!
